Care your jewellery deserves
Different materials require different care. Learn safe daily habits, what to avoid, and when to seek professional help.
Core principles
Start with these habits
- Different materials should be stored separately. What is hard can still be brittle, and what is soft can still be scratched.
- Jadeite can chip, crack, or break after strong impact. Pearls are soft organic gems and must be handled gently.
- Diamonds can scratch other gemstones and precious metals. Avoid long-term contact with cooking oil, skincare oils, cosmetics, and chemicals.
- Ultrasonic cleaning is not a universal home method. Pearls must never be cleaned with ultrasonic or steam equipment.
- Jewellery with cracks, repairs, filling, fragile settings, or loose stones should be professionally checked before cleaning.
- We do not make unsupported claims about chemical changes or jadeite mutation, and we do not give destructive testing instructions.

Practical guidance for each material
Avoid Impact and Friction
Avoid Impact and Friction
- Jewellery should be stored separately so pieces do not touch, scratch, or knock against each other.
- Hardness on a gemological scale does not mean resistance to impact. A diamond can scratch almost anything, yet still chip if struck at the right angle.
- Jadeite is tough, but it can chip, crack, or break after a strong impact. Never drop a jadeite bangle or pendant onto a hard surface.
- Diamonds can scratch other gemstones, pearls, and even 18K gold or platinum. Keep diamond pieces apart from the rest of your collection.
Avoid Oil, Cooking Fumes and Cosmetics
Avoid Oil, Cooking Fumes and Cosmetics
- Long-term contact with cooking oil, oil mist, skincare oils, cosmetics, perfume, and hairspray can dull the surface of gemstones and metals.
- Pearls are especially sensitive. Acids and alcohol in cosmetics can damage their lustre.
- Always put jewellery on after applying skincare, perfume, and makeup, not before.
- Wipe pieces with a soft, clean cloth after wear to remove residues from skin and environment.
Do Not Use Ultrasonic Cleaning Without Professional Advice
Do Not Use Ultrasonic Cleaning Without Professional Advice
- Ultrasonic cleaning is not a universal home-cleaning method. The vibration and heat can damage certain gemstones, settings, and fillings.
- Pearls must never be cleaned with ultrasonic or steam equipment. They are soft organic gems and can crack, discolour, or lose their nacre.
- Jewellery with cracks, previous repairs, filling, fragile settings, or loose stones should be professionally checked before any cleaning.
- When in doubt, use only lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap, and a soft cloth or brush — then dry thoroughly.
Jadeite Care
Jadeite Care
- Jadeite is natural stone. It may contain inclusions, colour roots, and structural lines that are part of its identity.
- Avoid strong impacts, sharp temperature changes, and prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals. Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth and dry immediately.
- Do not believe unsupported claims about jadeite changing colour or transforming over time due to body chemistry. Changes in appearance are usually caused by surface residue, lighting, or environment.
- Store jadeite pieces separately. A bangle should not be stacked next to diamond rings or metal bracelets.
Pearl Care
Pearl Care
- Pearls are soft organic gems. They rank lower on the hardness scale and are easily scratched or damaged by abrasion.
- Store pearls separately in a soft pouch or a dedicated compartment. Never toss them loose into a jewellery box with metal or diamond pieces.
- Clean pearls with a soft, slightly damp cloth only. Never use ultrasonic, steam, abrasive cloths, or jewellery dips.
- Put pearls on last and take them off first. This minimises contact with cosmetics, perfume, and perspiration.
Diamond Care
Diamond Care
- Diamonds are extremely hard, but they can still chip and they can scratch other jewellery. Store diamond pieces in individual soft pouches or lined compartments.
- Diamonds attract grease and oils. Regular cleaning with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft brush will restore their brilliance.
- Check claws and settings periodically. A loose diamond is easy to lose and expensive to replace.
- Remove diamond rings before heavy lifting, gardening, or contact sports to protect both the stone and the setting.
18K Gold and Set Jewellery
18K Gold and Set Jewellery
- 18K gold is durable but not indestructible. It can scratch, dent, and wear over time, especially on rings and bracelets.
- Set jewellery should be checked by a professional every 6 to 12 months to ensure stones are secure and claws are not worn.
- Avoid chlorine, bleach, and harsh cleaning products. They can damage gold alloys and weaken settings.
- Clean 18K gold pieces with lukewarm water and mild soap, then dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
When to Remove Jewellery
When to Remove Jewellery
- Before cooking, cleaning, or any activity with oil, grease, or chemicals.
- Before swimming, bathing, or entering a sauna or hot spring.
- Before exercising, lifting weights, or playing contact sports.
- Before sleeping if you wear rings with tall settings or long earrings.
- Before applying cosmetics, perfume, sunscreen, or hairspray.
When to Request Professional Inspection
When to Request Professional Inspection
- You notice a crack, chip, or change in the surface of a gemstone.
- A stone looks loose, moves, or makes a clicking sound in its setting.
- A prong, claw, or setting looks bent, worn, or missing.
- The piece has been dropped, struck, or caught on something.
- You are unsure whether a piece is safe for ultrasonic, steam, or chemical cleaning.
- You want a recorded assessment before sending the piece for repair or resizing.
