How to Read an IGI Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report.

The IGI Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report is an independent grading document. This guide explains each field on the report and how to verify the report against the actual diamond.

What is an IGI report?

IGI (International Gemological Institute) is an independent gemmological laboratory that grades diamonds — including laboratory-grown diamonds — against internationally recognised standards. An IGI Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report documents the stone's measurements, weight, colour, clarity, cut characteristics, fluorescence, growth method (where stated) and any post-growth treatment (where stated).

The report is a grading document, not a valuation. It does not state a monetary price.

Every field on the report, explained.

Report Number
A unique identifier printed on the report and — where applicable — laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle. Use this number to verify the report on the IGI website.
Report Type
For laboratory-grown stones the document is titled ‘Laboratory-Grown Diamond Report’. It should never be described simply as a ‘diamond report’ without the laboratory-grown wording.
Shape & Cutting Style
For example Round Brilliant, Oval, Cushion. Shape affects light performance and how cut quality is assessed.
Measurements
Millimetre dimensions of the stone, useful for confirming face-up size and matching the stone to the report.
Carat Weight
Weight to two decimal places. Compare against the report and any invoice or product page.
Colour Grade
Graded on the D–Z scale. D is the highest colourless grade — Lucky D Signature requires D colour where confirmed by the report.
Clarity Grade
From FL / IF through VVS, VS, SI to I. Clarity describes internal and surface characteristics under 10× magnification.
Cut Grade
Round brilliants receive an overall cut grade (e.g. Ideal / Excellent). Fancy shapes are usually not assigned an overall cut grade.
Polish
Quality of the final surface finish — Excellent, Very Good, Good, and so on.
Symmetry
Precision of facet alignment and outline symmetry.
Fluorescence
Reaction under long-wave UV — None, Faint, Medium, Strong, Very Strong. Lucky D Signature requires None where stated on the report.
Proportions Diagram
The plotted diagram showing table %, depth %, crown, pavilion, girdle and culet. Used to assess cutting precision.
Growth Method
Where stated, indicates whether the diamond was grown by CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) or HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature).
Post-Growth Treatment
Where stated, discloses any treatment applied after growth (for example HPHT annealing to improve colour). Absence of a statement does not always mean no treatment — read the report carefully.
Laser Inscription
Where applicable the girdle is inscribed with the report number and a laboratory-grown identifier. Inscription alone does not prove the stone matches the report — verify report + stone + inscription together.

How to verify a report online.

  1. Locate the report number on the physical report or product page.
  2. Visit the IGI report verification service at igi.org and enter the report number.
  3. Compare every graded field — shape, measurements, carat weight, colour, clarity, cut, polish, symmetry, fluorescence — against the copy you received.
  4. Where a laser inscription is present, check it against the report number under 10× magnification or ask us to demonstrate.
  5. If anything does not match, stop and contact Lucky Jewellery before completing the transaction.

What an IGI report does not do.

  • It does not state a monetary value or resale price.
  • It does not guarantee that a stone shown in a photograph or video matches the report — only physical verification does.
  • It does not describe jewellery setting quality, metal grade or craftsmanship — those are assessed separately.
  • Absence of a stated treatment does not always mean no treatment — always read the report in full.

Frequently asked questions about reading the report.

These questions focus on the fields that matter most when comparing a lab-grown diamond report to the actual stone and to our Lucky D Signature selection standard.

This title means the stone was grown in a laboratory, not mined from the earth. IGI uses this exact wording to prevent the diamond from being misrepresented as natural. The report will always state the growth method (CVD or HPHT) where available, so the origin is clear before you purchase.
